Quick reference: Shopify image sizes

Use this table as your cheat sheet. These are the recommended values that display sharply on modern high-resolution screens across Shopify's default themes.

Placement Recommended size Aspect ratio Notes
Product image 2,048 × 2,048 px 1:1 Square; keep every product image consistent
Collection image 1,024 × 1,024 px 1:1 Square works best across themes
Slideshow / hero banner 1,600 × 500 px to 1,920 × 1,080 px Wide Full-width; keep text in the safe center
Logo ~250 × 100 px Varies Transparent PNG
Favicon 32 × 32 px 1:1 Small square icon
Blog / article image 1,200 × 628 px ~1.91:1 Also used for social sharing

Product image size

A square 2,048 × 2,048 px image is the sweet spot for Shopify product photos: it looks crisp and enables zoom on every theme without bloating page weight. Shopify supports images up to 4,472 × 4,472 px (20 megapixels), but you should not upload files that large — they slow your store down for no visible benefit. Keep every product image the exact same square dimensions so your product grid stays visually consistent, and save each file as an optimized JPEG or WebP under 1 MB. If your photos aren't square yet, resize them to 2,048 × 2,048 px first.

Banner and slideshow images

Hero and slideshow banners stretch across the full width of the page, so they need to be wide — anywhere from 1,600 × 500 px up to 1,920 × 1,080 px depending on your theme. Because the edges get cropped on different screen sizes, keep any text and key focal points in the text-safe center of the image. Export at the larger end of the range so banners stay crisp on retina and high-resolution displays.

Logo and favicon

Upload your logo as a transparent PNG (around 250 × 100 px) so it sits cleanly on any header background color. The favicon — the tiny icon in the browser tab — should be a simple 32 × 32 px square; fine detail disappears at that size, so use a bold, recognizable mark. Need a clean, distraction-free product image to build these from? A background color changer makes it easy.

Format and speed

WebP is the recommended format for Shopify stores because it is 25–35% smaller than JPEG at the same visual quality. Smaller files mean faster page loads, and faster loads help both SEO ranking and conversion rates — slow product pages lose sales. Convert your exports with a PNG to WebP converter, and if any files are still heavy, run them through an image compressor to shrink them further without visible quality loss.

Rule of thumb: create your master product image as a 2,048 × 2,048 px square, then export it as WebP for the store. You get sharp, zoomable images and fast page loads at the same time.
